What was The Rally To Restore Sanity?
In Aug of 2010 Glenn Beck held a Rally to Restoring Honor in Washington D.C. at the Lincoln Memorial. It was reported 100,000-200,000 attended the Rally.
Jon Stewart announced he would be putting on a Rally to Restore Sanity as an answer to Beck’s Rally. Stating “We can agree to disagree without calling each other Hitler.” It would also be held at the Lincoln Memorial in Oct 2010.
To coincide with the Rally to Restore Sanity Stephen Colbert announced he would also be putting on a March to Keep Fear Alive. Fun fact; Colbert got permits for his March and Stewart’s permits were denied. Stewart and Colbert decided to combine efforts and put on the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear.
Satellite Rallies were popping up all across the country to support Stewart’s efforts.
John Stewart vs. Stephen Colbert
In Chicago Angie McMahon organized a satellite Rally to be held at the Petrillo Band Shell in Grant Park on Oct 30, 2010. While 6 months pregnant she raised $25,000 from Facebook fans, got denied the permits, and had about 7,000 people show up (4,000 who left very upset when they couldn’t watch TV in the park).
She documents her 38 day journey to try to Restore Sanity in her solo show: “The Day Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert nearly killed me…my rally to restore sanity” running Fridays at 9pm in January. Directed by Kevin Reome.
