On Friday Sept 15, 2017 our audience was surprised and delighted with a drop by Stand Up performance from director Judd Apatow (Bridesmaids, The Big Sick, Freaks and Geeks) during the Lincoln Lodge show. He was in town dropping off his daughter at Northwestern University and decided to drop by. It was the coolest!
Here is what audiences said about Tindrella (Fridays at 10pm)
The Hollywood Reporter named Nick Vatterott one of the “break-outs” at his Montreal Just For Laughs Comedy Festival debut. Since then he has performed on Conan, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Comics Unleashed, AXS TV, What's your [email protected]%king deal and has a half hour special on Comedy Central. Nick was a producer/writer/performer on Comedy Central’s stand-up sketch hybrid show Mash Up. He's written for MTV, the critic's choice awards and GORBURGER. He's done panel on Red Eye and made an appearance on TRU TV's Friends Of The People. His album FOR AMUSEMENT ONLY was named one of the TOP TEN albums of the year by Vulture, Laughspin and Splitsider. Splitsider also recently highlighted him in their "ON THE VERGE" series. Vulture also named him in their list of THE 50 comedians you should know. He was also the recipient of the prestigious Andy Kaufman Award. And before heading off to NYC, Chicago Magazine listed Nick as “The Funniest Man in Chicago.” Nick Vatterott’s comedy has been called high-energy, improvisational, unconventional, outside the box, but most of all hilarious! (HE NEVER CALLS IT THAT, BUT YOU BETTER BELIEVE HE'LL THROW THAT COMPLIMENT IN HIS BIO!!!)
CATCH HIM THIS WEEK AT UNDER THE GUN FRIDAY AND SATURDAY AT 8pm
We interview an audience member about a crime they may or may not have commited. Then we explore the "crime" through interviews and Improv scenes. Lets look at the time line one more time.
One night only!
The Chicago Tribune said:
"...Angie McMahon's performance in the Koenig role. There she sits off to the side, calmly speaking into a microphone and capturing Koenig's smooth, honeyed vocals and conversational tics...McMahon is essentially the show's director, interrupting and scuttling scenes as soon as they head off on lackluster tangents. She's running the show, and her instincts are sharp."-Nina Metz
NewCity Stage said:
"For “One Story,” the cast interviews an audience member about a time they were “falsely accused” and then, led by host and creator/director Angie McMahon, who has a killer Sarah Koenig impression, calls witnesses, questions memories and imbues the whole thing with canny mock earnestness. The show works best when it’s following the “Serial” structure—replaying scenes from different perspectives, allowing McMahon to question the accused, hearing from experts. "- Zach Freeman
Two respected pillars of the Chicago independent comedy season combine forces to produce a truly unique program!
Acclaimed North Side comedy theater Under the Gun and the nation’s longest running independent stand up showcase The Lincoln Lodge are partnering to produce a program containing sketch, improv, stand up and storytelling shows all under one roof in a true first for the Chicago comedy scene.
Angie McMahon, Owner of Under the Gun Theater comments that “We were looking for an innovative approach for our fall and winter programming and when we heard that the Lincoln Lodge was seeking a new venue we decided to invite them to come on over to our house! We are excited that the inclusion of a stand up focused showcase in our offering also presents a lot of opportunity for collaboration and innovation across the comedy disciplines”
Mark Geary, president of Tight Five Productions, the non-profit that produces the Lincoln Lodge, added “It’s no secret that we are actively looking for a permanent home for our productions so when the invite came for a place to produce our 18th Lincoln Lodge season we jumped at the chance to partner on a truly unique experiment in programming.
Not only will the Lincoln Lodge be joining established Under the Gun hits like Tinderella and Breaking News in its weekly offering but Tight Five Productions will also be leveraging its relationship with the Stand up community to bring other shows into the collaboration. To that end the critically acclaimed Blackout Diaries show hosted by renowned Chicago comedian and producer Sean Flannery has already been added to the slate of programming at Under The Gun theater set to debut in September of 2017.

From our Level 1 Instructor Ben Bowman:
I'm Ben Bowman. I've been performing and directing improv and sketch in Chicago since 2000. I've taken ridiculously extensive notes as I burned through Second City, The Annoyance and iO. I've studied with Chicago's best teachers and played on nearly every stage in the city. I've regurgitated much of my experience on The Boiling Point Improv Blog (https://boilingpointimprov.wordpress.com/) . (Jimmy Carrane himself called it "a mini-master class in comedy.") Now, I'm teaching Level One at Under the Gun Theater in Wrigleyville. I'd like you to take my class. Here's why...
* My main goal is to make improvisation simple. I want to rid your brains of all the confusing junk you've been saddled with. I will teach you how to sharpen the top of your scene so everything after that is smooth.
* I have a ton of performance experience. Yes, you could fall on your face for years and learn the stuff I learned the hard way, but I have dozens of shortcuts to spare you that pain.
* I know the curriculum of the other theaters in town. If you're confused how a note you got at Annoyance applies to a scene you tried at iO, I can help bridge the gap. I can also distill the wisdom of incredible teachers who have since moved on.
* Our classes are comparatively cheap. With us, you pay just $25 a class. And since every class is three hours, you're paying just $8.33 an hour. That's MATHEMATICALLY CORRECT. Tuition discounts are available if you sign up before January 1. (Annoyance is $200/class, iO is $295/class, Second City is $355/class. We are just $125/class if you sign up early.)
* You are not going to be a nameless drone in the crowd. You won't have to fight thousands of other students for stage time or individual attention. Under the Gun is a nurturing environment and you'll get honest-to-God shows in front of audiences starting in Level Two.
If that sounds good, click here (https://www.underthegun.theater/levelone-game/) and sign up for Level One. I'll be your teacher if you sign up for the Tuesday class, but our other teachers are also awesome and energetic.
Thanks for reading. I hope to see some of you as we take off in 2017!

Relationships are hard. Dating is harder. That’s why Blind Date is here to help Chicagoans find love, or at least a reasonable approximation. Blind Date matches two people on a very real blind date who will navigate all the excitement and curiosity of a first date on stage. The cast then improvises all the romance and challenges of this couple's future together. We cannot stress enough that this is a very real blind date. It is sure to be a show that's as spark-filled as you would expect any successful blind date to be.

The suggestion is "cheese cake". You pull out two chairs out with the thought of doing some kind of scene about a birthday party. Your scene partner starts talking about how hard it is to be working for Eli's Cheese Cake Company. You could push forward with your idea of birthday party and make both ideas work. You try to also put your birthday idea in this scene. The both of you are just really talking to try to figure out what the scene is about. About 30 seconds have gone by before you figure out that you are ex lovers and NOW something is going on between you.
What if I told you that you could be on the same page as your scene partner from the first words uttered. That you could learn techniques that are only taught by the Theater's in NY like UCB.
The "Game of The Scene" as laid out by the UCB Improv Manual breaks it down this way. You initiate with a fully realized premise. You identify the first unusual thing. You frame that thing with your partner. You play the "Game". This is what we teach in our Apprentice Program (starting Sept 12). You can read more about it and register HERE
Just Joking Guys!
Today I was reading an excellent essay by Kelly Leonard about Donald Trump's comments yesterday. To catch you up Trump made what he is calling a joke...here it is:
""Hillary wants to abolish, essentially abolish the Second Amendment," Trump said. "By the way, and if she gets to pick — if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks. Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is, I don’t know."
I was even tagged on facebook by a friend even asking...what do you think...was this a joke?
Well...yes I do think it was meant to try to pander to his audience in hopes to elicit a laugh. But his joke construction was poor, and his content was mean (not to mention you should not ever ask people to shoot public figures...because some folks don't understand you aren't being serious. Its like talking about bombs in an airport. We now know that to be inappropriate no matter how much you are joking).
Comedy can be used for biting social satire, but we should use it to talk about things that either have not been talked about or haven't been talked about enough. AND we should ALWAYS punch up.
I will leave you with one of my favorite quotes and I am not sure who said it...but Martin DeMaat said it to me first "Keep them laughing and then slip the truth in while their mouths are open"
We would love for you to chime in on this. Tell us what you think on Facebook.

The Apprentice Program will begin on Saturday, July 16th. It’s a 12 week educational program consisting of weekly coached rehearsals and shows at Under The Gun Theater. Apprentice performers will work closely with a team of Under The Gun Ensemble members. Prospective members of the Apprentice Program must sign up for an audition. We have a limited number of spots, and we will not necessarily accept all applications.
Focus of the Apprentice Program
Members of the Apprentice Program will be part of an ensemble and will focus on specific skills to become a better team player. Basic skills such as listening, agreement, & support will be reinforced. We will also focus on particular skills to understand and play games within our scene work. A team of coaches will keep track of your individual progress and you will receive specific individual feedback midway through the program. It is recommended that apprentice performers get a copy of the UCB Comedy Improvisation Manual, since much of the instruction will be related to the game of the scene as laid out in that book.
The Apprentice Program is designed for improvisors with 1 or more years of experience. If accepted, you will be expected to conduct yourself as if this were professional opportunity. Your rehearsals will be on Saturday afternoons from 1:30-4:30pm. You will be expected to be punctual for rehearsals. If you are more than 15 minutes late for rehearsal, you will be considered absent. If you are absent for more than 3 rehearsals during the program, you will be dropped.
There will be 6 performances on Thursday evenings at 7:30 pm (July 21 – Aug 25). You must attend the preceding rehearsal to perform in the Thursday show. You will be expected to arrive 30 minutes before show time to warm up with your team for that evening.
How to Apply to the Apprentice Program
Auditions will take place on Saturday, July 9 at 1:30pm. You can sign up online for the audition here:
You will be notified on the day after your audition if you have been accepted into the program. If you were in the Fall 2015 or Winter 2016 apprentice program, you do not need to audition again. However you should fill email [email protected] about your intent to continue.
Upon acceptance into the program, you will be asked to pay the full tuition of $331. Students who are repeating the Apprentice Program can get a discount of $50 off the cost of tuition.
